Originally called Red, and later Red Matrix, the Hubzilla Project was started in 2012. It traces its roots back to 2010.
The Hubzilla Association was founded to support the Hubzilla Project in September 2023 and has the following purpose and mission:
Purpose
The purpose of the Association is to support the development, promotion, and distribution of the Hubzilla open source software.
This means among other things:
- Support the development and maintenance tasks of:
- The Hubzilla open source software, addons, themes, extensions, and approved forks.
- Support services (forums, wikis, docs, etc.) for users and admins of the Hubzilla software.
- Websites and other infrastructure related to the Hubzilla software.
- Engage in networking; collaboration; creating & maintaining documentation; and education of the public.
- Collecting and allocating funds to support the above activities.
The association is politically and denominationally neutral.
This purpose is part of the Articles of Association. This purpose was approved by the Board of Directors on the 31st day of March 2025 in Board Resolution #2, and ratified by the Assembly on the 9th day of April 2025 via Assembly Resolution #2. It went into effect on the 9th day of April 2025.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Association is to support the development, promotion, and distribution of the Hubzilla open source software.
This includes:
- Strengthening the community of Hubzilla software adopters, including, but not limited to, site owners, administrators, moderators, web hosts, and end-users.
- Support of developers of official addons, modules, widgets, themes, and other components of the Hubzilla software.
- Attending or organising information events, training courses, and workshops to raise awareness of the benefits, possibilities, and use of the Hubzilla software.
- Provide documentation for users, administrators, and developers.
- Encourage and facilitate interoperability between Hubzilla and other platforms, protocols, software, and systems.
This mission statement was adopted on the 31st day of March 2025 by the Board of Directors in Board Resolution #3.
