I made a cryptpad document of a hopefully simplified tutorial that can be sent to family and friends less tech savvy that want an alternative to facebook. I wanted to share it here in hopes it would be helpful for anyone interested in expanding the network :)

I see the problem with a tutorial cast in text, if it is not updated by the Hubzilla developers, that it will no longer be up-to-date with the next Hubzilla version at the latest. A solution that implements the Heliza: Considerations for Hubzilla mobile agent concept would be perfect. The idea is that Heliza relieves me as a user of the work of searching through the extensive Hubzilla documentation and simply provides me with answers to the questions I ask ;-). A prototype for Heliza could be discobot, like #^https://fediverse.town/ discobot.

Nice work, thanks for taking the time. Can't have too many tutorials.

One thing you might want to consider adding is how to connect to somebody, which for somebody completely new may not be as straight forward as it seems.

Did you try Hubzilla's Wiki app yet? It has the advantage over Cryptpad that you can use "observer aware" links if you choose BBCode, like this one: /channel/
The above link will point to the viewer's own channel (if they're logged in), and it works like this:
[observer.baseurl]/channel/[observer.webname]

The wiki app is how I did my own getting started tutorial.

The web site was slow to load, then incomplete, so unable to view or comment about it.

The other problem is that new features are constantly introduced, bugs ignored, incomplete QA (if at all), together with programmer culture of documentation being unimportant. It seems that because of this culture, there is repetition of documentation by others, a pity. Better project management is required to minimise bugs, penis measurement (sorry, gratuitous new features), quality tests, support new participants in the project, etc..

As mentioned by 'the lazy teddy', the extant 'wiki' function within hubzilla itself would be preferable, but not sure of the benefit of being "observer aware".

@citc There's nothing bad about decentral working on tutorials. Next great step would be that all us motivated people with such great skills would start to bundle our efforts. With the bundling, the "intelligence" part of swarm intelligence would start happening.
4 of us are working on a face-lifting of the official Hubzilla website. In my opinion, that website should prove that all of us involved in the Hubzilla project, despite all these decentralized feautres, are capable of bundling our decentralized strengths and presenting them in a central place. The website should show that Hubzilla is heading towards a promising future thanks to a functioning teamwork. This should be especially visible at the page /get_involved of that website, which is at the moment still difficult to fill with content because the various "teams" working on Hubzilla are unfortunately still so incredibly intangible. I don't think there's any problems with @zotlabs.org | Contribute, you should be able to verify that by visiting the channel when not logged in. It's very well accessible. If that would not be the case, then you should get in touch with its admin @zotlabs.org | admin, which is indicated on #^https://zotlabs.org/siteinfo.json. But since that's not the case, you might get help for your connection problems at @Hubzilla Users Support

I tried to connect to contribute@zotlabs.org and it throws an error about 'Protocol disabled'. I've no idea what that means.

Since always. :)
First it was a hub but then moved to a redirect to a subdomain at zotlabs.org, now I am working at reverting that as zotlabs.org never became what I wanted it to be and concentrating on Hubzilla seems make more sense in the way that it is targeted to one tool and brand.

No. Where do you get that from?
There once was start.hubzilla.org which in the end was overrun by spam accounts that were at best shady up to a severe legal problem. I did not feel like deleting more than 20 accounts per day.

This does not necessarily mean dying, there is just something wrong on the server, I suspect the file system where the database is stored has run out of space. At keast that would be the first place for me to check.
Or the database is not running.
Neither have I got no link to the hub, nor do I know who the admin is. This is just guessing.
