Serious question: What will happen to the ‘hamburger’ menu?
The menu in the navigation bar (usually at the top right) with ☰ as an icon, which you can use to access the apps, was called the ‘hamburger menu’ because, with a little imagination, the icon resembles a hamburger bun with a "
Bulette" (sorry, I was born in Berlin, Spandau to be precise) in the centre. The term has long been established (also in other software).
Now, with the current version 9.4, Hubzilla has said goodbye to Font Awesome to display the icons and uses the Bootstrap icons instead.
The hamburger menu is now represented by the ‘Three dots vertical’ icon (also commonly used for menus), i.e. (in fonts it is called Vertical Ellipsis) ‘⋮’.
Well... and that would be a really poor hamburger. It might have been possible to keep it more visually similar by using the bootstrap icon ‘List’. But that's not really the case either, because the lines appear thinner. It doesn't matter. It was a design decision that is absolutely fine and there is nothing wrong with it. Nothing needs to be changed. The menu now looks like this: ⋮
However, in view of my commitment to documentation, I ask myself whether it makes sense to continue calling the menu the ‘hamburger menu’. Not really, because if someone asks (or you explain it yourself), there's really no longer any connection to the bun and "Bulette".
But what to call it?
Especially in the Hubzilla help?
Because I would like to change this completely (I have to replace the symbol in all relevant documents anyway)... and also not refer to the old name (it's help or manual and not a history book). In my articles elsewhere and also in the Hubzilla KnowledgeDB, I would refer to the old name and the old symbol in brackets).
So.... I think the clearest name would be ‘App menu’, because it is only used to access the apps or app management at (exactly) this point.
The ⋮ symbol is also used in other places (for example as a button for the post menu), which is why a general name for the three dots would be unfavourable.
So.... please give me some feedback.
