Federating with GoToSocial?

Has anyone had luck creating a connection with someone on a GoToSocial instance?

I have a friend who has moved to GoToSocial and when I try to add them as a connection I get an error message "Protocol disabled."

I've only similar experiences here. Seems incompatible. And if connections you have repeat GoToSocial posts, then they still show up as iconless, textless entries in your notifications.

yes, i added a contact today and it worked. It shows as an activitypub connection
