Merry X-Mas everyone...!

I'm just starting my journey back into the Hubzilla/Nomad/Zot-Realm of the fediverse and while I am (almost) totally happy about the software (Streams), I now am collecting the important forums/channels to add them into my connections.

I'm just so glad that this forum actually lives and works and I can post to it. Other's I tried seem to be dead. (zotadel?) So forgive me that I post here, because it might not be the appropriate space for this message.

But anyway, if you can help me to connect to the relevant Groups/Forums, that woud be extremely helpful!

And I'd also have a contribution: Why don't we all our platform/software to our display names? Like @Witcraft (Hubzilla) and I are doing it... that shows identification and hopefully some little awarenes in the big crowds coming into the Mastosphere... that there is a lot more than only what they see. 8-)

Why don't we all our platform/software to our display names? Like @Witcraft (Hubzilla) and I are doing it... that shows identification and hopefully some little awarenes in the big crowds coming into the Mastosphere... that there is a lot more than only what they see. 8-)

Actually, I added that only to distinguish two non-linked identities (one on Hubzilla, one on streams).

However, I like the idea to see who is running on which platform. And site domain is not always easy to see or even making that clear.

The idea is good. But after having tried to send privacy-restricted photos to a Mastodon contact, I would actually prefer to know about the reality (where it does matter) :slight_smile:

Also, I like the idea of reminding people that there is the idea that it should not matter, and users commenting might be from different platforms.

In my themes, I was thinking of adding a favicon of the instance the person is posting from with their post. In most cases, it would be the logo of the platform they are using, unless the admin changed it. (If they did change it, we respect that.)

Mastodon feels like using a screwdriver as a pry bar.

@Oliver Mastodon= not purpose built for what is needed, but it does work.

Hubzilla=ill fitted to the job at hand. Perhaps capable of doing what's needed with a lot of messing about and hammering.

That's what I meant.

@Crow For me, Mastodon doesn't work at all, the entire user interface is disastrous, I feel flooded with rubbish and the privacy settings are miserable.
I get along wonderfully with Hubzilla (and Streams), and no, I am neither a Linuxhead nor do I write exclusively about Hubzilla. What you see are my technical questions to the community, I run my own server (because the installation is really easy in contrast to Mastodon) but have no idea about such things and need help from time to time which I get thanks to the great people here.
What you might not see are the many posts about music, sports, art and society. I don't write everything publicly. That's how a lot of Hubzillians do it. Maybe many hubs are not public, Hubzilla is ideal as a family server, or for example for clubs. Hubzilla can be run on the grid or off the grid, we don't know how many people use the software, any comparisons with any Mastodon servers are completely wrong.
Hubzilla is probably much more widespread than we all think.
That's just how different we are in our expectations.

@Oliver My original plan for commonworlds was for HZ to replace my old Drupal install that served as a repository for the tabletop RPG I run.

But I got totally bogged down in trying to get the site working like I wanted, while also trying to understand the purpose and point of HQ/streams/channels in hubzilla.

Notably though, I've seen zero interest in my gamer buddies to experiment with the site. I think it's just too hard for someone who isn't used to figuring out tech and doesn't have unlimited time.

I'm now finding some other, mostly Streams sites that look interesting, but I have to note that without someone else giving me a handholding tutorial on how to find them, I never would have.

I completely agree with you on this point. I had plans to create a runners community with Hubzilla a few years ago, but it didn't work out, no one understood (or wanted to understand) it.

The funny thing is that I am now connected to a lot of Fediverse Runners through Streams.

Streams is a real underdog, for many (historical) reasons.
You only really find out about its existence when people like you and me write about it. Mike has no interest (anymore) in promoting his software, he even goes so far as to say that "streams" is just a "project name". I like that, more important is that the software is easy to install and does what it is supposed to do.
I have both a Hubzilla and a Streams server, for various reasons.

@Oliver Having gotten a tutorial on how to ignore the local "view friend suggestions" and look at streams directories, I'm also finding people... but the odd thing is that virtually ALL of them have a streams splash page with a "visit" link that just takes me to their Mastodon account.

I'm guessing that Streams content is typically hidden/private.

if you are led to a Mastodon page, then Mastodon and not Streams is behind it :-)
My Streams content, for example, is about 80% public.
However, access to /directory is mostly not open, as I have just discovered.

After trying a bit to find hubzilla-people by interest in /directory, I now understand what you mean. Yes, it is not that easy.
However, I never use it that way. My connections usually come about because I discover interesting people in comments.
My suggestion to all: fill the profile-keywords sensibly, they work very well in the search.

I think we need to have an entire paradigm shift related to decentralized social media. What we need to do is marry the community aspect of forums and discussion groups with the reach of social media. We already have done this on a technology level with Hubzilla, which allows forums and discussion groups in addition to personal social accounts, but I think we need to do more to change how people think and interact with decentralized social media.

For example, instead of focusing on promoting individual accounts (i.e. a directory), we focus on introducing people to communities. These communities typically have a specific topic or interest associated with them. Once people join a community or lurk around a bit, they begin to discover individual people whom they may want to connect with or follow.

This will help people find interesting people, and would also weed out a lot of spammy accounts because they either do not participate in communities, or if they do, the moderators remove their posts (in most cases). And even if they don't, people will see them for what they are.
