How does the "Public Stream" actually work?

I set
"Import Public Streams Import and allow access to public content pulled from other sites. Warning: this content is unmoderated."
to Yes
an activated the "Public Stream" app.
Is there an other setting i have to look at? From where do the posts actually come from - from the directory server ?
