Setting up php mailer

Hello, I am having real trouble trying to figure out how to setup the php mailer.

I uploaded the add-on file in public_html/addons but then when adding the SMTP configuration lines in .htaccess the website crashes. Don't know if its the correct directory or if I have to run a command to activate the add-on.

Thanks for the advise. You were right, it was much easier uploading the entire repository. The command wasn't working because im very illiterate and also because of the permissions. Once I figured that out it worked perfectly.
