Have you complained to the creator of kilogram.makeup yet?
Because this could be another case of someone building something largely only against Mastodon and not knowing that Hubzilla exists.

This is a fact that I have to point out again and again: Handles must always be used without the leading "@" in Hubzilla.

No need to apologise. This is the support forum after all... and this subtle difference (with the "@" on the handle) is nowhere near as well known as it should be. Nearly all other Fediverse services (except Friendica, streams, Hubzilla and related) use the "@" at the front of the handle. Presumably to distinguish them from email addresses. That's why you might think that Hubzilla channel names should have this too.

We probably don't even need to wait for the connection to fail, I think. Just strip leading
@
chars and look up the connection like normal.
