No need to apologise. This is the support forum after all... and this subtle difference (with the "@" on the handle) is nowhere near as well known as it should be. Nearly all other Fediverse services (except Friendica, streams, Hubzilla and related) use the "@" at the front of the handle. Presumably to distinguish them from email addresses. That's why you might think that Hubzilla channel names should have this too.

@Altyr We probably don't even need to wait for the connection to fail, I think. Just strip leading @ chars and look up the connection like normal.
