504 Gateway Timeout due to cloning?

Is it possible that cloning a Hubzilla channel is creating a 504 Gateway Timeout?
What can I do to avoid/solve this problem?
The error appeared for about 10 minutes, and then the hub came back again. The attempted clone is not listed in the directory of the new server.

Yes. There are a number of things of that can cause that issue. The most common is a web server timeout. Another possibility is running out of resources.

I've never gotten it to work when including the content. I always get a timeout.

Does the server need certain settings in PHP.ini for it to work?

I am not sure about @Ema エマ but in my case, if I check the box to sync the content and press the button to start cloning the account, it times out shortly thereafter.
