What is the best practice to deactivate a Hubzilla core Add-on for the entire website?
Say for example, if I want to keep Chat totally unavailable in the Apps area so that no member/user of the site can install it - say, for Resource Usage concerns ( this is just for example, as HZ chat may be using very minimal resource : I am saying in the background that many shared hosts will not like chat services to run in shared accounts).
Can I just delete a folder by going in the root via Files Manager - but in that case I find that sites/app folder contains files with names of all core-bundled chats but deleting them has no effect - obviously this is NOT any recommended way. So the sum-up is :
how the site administrator can uninstall an App completely? OR
how the site administrator can disable an Add-on so that no new users can enable or use it at present, keeping the option to enable in future if the need is there or "resources" are favorable.

If I have missed any Administrator-Guide or help-file which enumerates this, kindly share such link, if its there.
Also, I will be interested to know if there is any "dirty and quick" method to do this although I fully understand that this should never be the way to do things.

Whatever you do, definitely always broadcast to your users in time on various channels so they can be prepared.

Let me piggyback on your question with a totally off-topic query: I'm interested in the economy and sustainability of shared web hosting accounts. Do you have any experience or link about what is or is not desirable to be hosted there? I'm not asking about what's possible without getting caught, I'm asking what would not be unethical to run if everyone was publicly doing it. I went through quite a few terms of service legal documents from dozens of independent such PaaS providers and they seem too vague and to be copy & pasted from each other without understanding it and also probably originating from many decades ago.

Sorry, I missed the "shared hosts" part. Did you install from the zip file? In that case, download the file with your FTP client, edit it, and re-upload. In this case, you'll probably have to do this manually with every update anyway.

If I revert the changes (that is again undo the change) just before next update - is that okay for a normal command line update?

I'm not sure how git determines a file has been modified. Timestamps might be involved. Your best option to restore a single file would probably still be git checkout </path/to/file>. There's also git reset

There was some guide somewhere on the detailed meanings of

Git has a very extensive built-in help. git help lists available commands, git help <command> gives instructions on how to use a specific command, for example git help stash.

Apologies for my half-assed answer. I once asked about hiding the invite app, and @mike answered that for me, but I couldn't find it again and only remembered the changing the "requires" line. I should probably keep my mouth shut if I'm not entirely sure about the answer.
