if I post a foto upright - it there a way to show it without the checked pattern - full scale also?

It's hardcoded as inline style in gallery App code. Find the line with bg.svg and comment it out. (gallery.php line 214)

full scale perhaps can be achieved also, but instead dirty fixes there should be switch in settings added and style moved to css and code pushed up.
But I do not know how css styling of addons is meant to be done. I can try to put it into my global css style and see if it works.

You can define the content height with the "Max height of content (in pixels)" setting.
