Hi, this is for the Hubzilla Support Forum
My channel's name is ana. I have a channel friend, rcyl for short. rcyl wants to share a file only with me and a few friends who do not use hubzilla; for them rcyl has created an access token also called rcyl.
rcyl uploads the file marking it with the 'padlock' to share it only with friends , then uploads, and sees it in the section 'cloud' or files, but I , ana , can not see it. I try to see it logging in as rcyl (access token) and I can't even log in ...
trying things, rcyl puts the contents of the file to share as text only in a postm, in the section 'channel' and to be seen only by ana and rcyl, then ana can see it. so ... what are we doing wrong that I can see the text-only post but not the file?

rcyl needs to make sure you are in their friends group.

To verify this they can install the privacy groups app from /apps/available
Then click on the app or select "Privacy Groups" from their channel menu (profile image on the left side of the top panel)
The rest is pretty self explaining...

The access token at the moment can not be part of a privacy group. So they need to select both, the privacy group and the access token, from the ACL selector (lock icon) for the permissions of the folder and the contained files.

I've done this, it works within the same instance but federation doesn't seem to go as far as sharing files like this ...

Right, we do not send files to other servers in this case. That would not be very secure. But. You could send your friend a link to your file (you can find the correct link in the file info) and if they click the link they should get access to the file. They will be automagically authenticated in the background and get the correct permissions granted by your site.
