Useful information on Hubzilla's search
If you use Hubzilla's search to search for a post or a comment, it can have three possible outcomes:
1) It shows the post or the comment. In this case, everything is fine and dandy.
2) It shows nothing. In this case, it genuinely couldn't find what you're looking for.
If it's a comment, this is natural and has been for a while. Hubzilla can no longer find comments on something that it doesn't now yet. You usually have to search for the whole branch of the thread, comment by comment, until Hubzilla can find the desired comment.
You do not have to search for all comments in the thread! You only have to search for what leads to the the comment you're interested in.
Let's assume it's the only comment on the third comment on the sixth comment on a post.
So you start with the post itself. First of all, make sure that the poster does not have any restricted permissions. If they're amongst your connections, but you don't allow them to send their posts to you, Hubzilla's search can't find their posts. If you have channel permissions activated, put that poster in a more permissive privacy group temporarily, and put them back into their original privacy group after you're done searching.
Also, check whether you've got that user ignored, blocked or Superblocked.
Once you're sure that no permission issues are in your way on your side, search for the post.
Next, search for the sixth direct comment on that post. Hubzilla has no permission setting for sending you comments on someone else's posts, so only check whether you've got that user ignored, blocked or Superblocked.
After you've found that comment, search for the third comment on this comment unless it has miraculously already appeared. It usually doesn't.
After you've found that comment, search for the comment you've been looking for. You should be able to find it.
I'm not sure, but if the permissions on your side are definitely okay, and you fail to find a post or a comment from Hubzilla or (streams), this could be because the poster has Superblocked you. Again, I'm not sure if a Superblock on someone else's side leads to search results being blank.
3) The search with the entry field and the spinner below continues indefinitely. The most common reason for this to occur is because you're searching for another instance's representation of a post or a comment.
The solution: Always search for the original of the post/comment at its source.
For example: You've found one of my posts or comments while searching for a hashtag on mastodon.social.
If you search for the mastodon.social URL with the mastodon.social representation of my post/comment (
https://mastodon.social/@jupiter_rowland@hub.netzgemeinde.eu/112305011959155400
), Hubzilla will search forever. It can't do that.
But if you copy the original hub.netzgemeinde.eu URL of the post/comment (
https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/item/4c8c73a8-84cb-4df3-adb1-59791deda635
) from the "Open original page" menu entry and paste that one into Hubzilla's search, it'll most likely find it.
If you do copy the original URL, and Hubzilla's search still gets stuck spinning indefinitely, it's then that you can assume there has to be something wrong, probably an incompatibility issue.
