Alt text on images?

It looks like Hubzilla image descriptions don't automatically show up as alt-text on image embeds. Is there a way to add alt-text?

Also, since the image-embed interface looks a lot like html, I'm curious whether I would be able to embed non-local images.

Asuming that by "embed" you mean what I think you mean, I can answer the 2nd part. If you put the URL of an image in as a link, it will embed the image into your message as in:

Edit: Updated to include alt-text, which required moving the URL from where the insert tool put it.

Gnaaah... Alt text for images with Hubzilla is not possible with on-board tools.

If you want to have an alt text, you have to insert the image ‘on foot’ into the posting with HTML, i.e:

[img=>IMAGE-URL>]YOUR ALT-TEXT[/img]

Thanks, @Der Pepe (Hubzilla) ⁂ ⚝, but I can't seem to get that to work. It seems to just get replaced with either text or a link that reads "Photo / image", not in-line embedding, and sometimes even the link doesn't seem to work.

Help?

Also, by default it will use the image title for alt text. Normally this is the file name, but if you upload the image first in the photos app, you can change it.

It would be nice if there was an UI to do the same when uploading directly in a post too, but that's not the case at the moment.

Now i can help myself out for. You should bear in mind that there are people on Mastodon who block profiles that don't have alt text in their pictures.

If you embed images from your file storage, Hubzilla's image embedding code normally looks like this:

[zrl=][zmg=x][/zmg][/zrl]

What you have to do is:

Mark and cut the image URL from between the [zmg=] tag and the [/zmg] tag.
Paste it into the [zmg=] tag and overwrite the image size entry.
Put the alt-text between the [zmg=] tag and the [/zmg] tag.

                                        Cut this ________________
[zrl=][zmg=x][/zmg][/zrl]

             Paste it over this ________________
[zrl=][zmg=x][/zmg][/zrl]

                         Put your alt-text here \/
[zrl=][zmg=][/zmg][/zrl]

Result:
[zrl=][zmg=][/zmg][/zrl]

Oh, and anyone who wants to take this over into some documentation, feel free to do so.

@dynamic_hubzilla I actually prefer not to specify an image size because doing so in the image-embedding code reduces the quality of the image.

The image is resized anyway. It is shrunk to fit into the text area width-wise. But it appears to me like adding a specific image size results in the image being resized twice over.

It would still be useful to know what is technically possible. Perhaps what I'd really like is a pointer to documentation on what this syntax can do, if such a thing exists.

Hubzilla's built-in help is currently being re-written from scratch by @Der Pepe (Hubzilla) ⁂ ⚝, both in German and in English.

In Streams, we do it this way:

I don't know if that works in Hubzilla. (Mike added the extra line breaks to make it easier to find and edit the alt text -- by default, it's the photo filename.)

I'm not going to bother with alt text in Hubzilla until there is a gui way of doing it, as there should be. It would be easier for me to remember if it were plain html.

I think alt text is important enough to do it, even if it's a bit inconvenient, but I absolutely agree that plain html would be a lot friendlier.
